Stefano De Polis

Born in Rome in 1958, he graduated from the University of Rome in 1982 and subsequently worked on several projects carried out by Italy’s National Research Council (CNR).

He joined the Bank of Italy in 1983 and was assigned to the Banking Supervision Area, where a large part of his work was devoted to on-site inspections.

In the early 1990s he contributed to the drafting of the Consolidated Law on Banking and was actively involved in the restructuring of the Italian banking system.

As an expert on banking supervision, he assumed roles of increasing responsibility and complexity. In 2006 he joined the senior management of the Banking Supervision Directorate. In 2012 he was appointed Head of the Banking Groups Supervision Directorate. Two years later he became Deputy Head of the Directorate General for Financial Supervision and Regulation, where he was actively involved in the implementation of the Banking Union.

In March 2015 he held the position of Italian representative in the Single Resolution Board, and on 21st September of that year he was called upon to set up and direct the Resolution and Crisis Management Unit.

Since 1st February 2017 he has been serving as Secretary General of the Insurance Supervisory Authority (IVASS).

Since 2018 he is a member of the Implementation and Assessment Committee of the IAIS (International Association of Insurance Supervisors).

He carried out many assignments at both national and international level on behalf of the Bank of Italy. As a former member of the Basel Committee’s Supervision and Implementation Group he was Chairman of the Pillar 2 Working Group. From 2009 to 2015, he represented Italy in the Senior Supervisors Group.

He has written articles and studies on corporate governance, risk measurement and management in financial intermediaries, and banking and insurance supervision.
