Gian Luca Trequattrini
Born in Macerata on 12 August 1960.
Member of the Governing Board and Deputy Governor of Banca d'Italia (Presidential Decree of 13 February 2026). In this capacity, he is also a member of the joint Governing Board of the Italian Insurance Supervisory Authority (IVASS).
He graduated with honours in Economics at 'Sapienza' University of Rome and subsequently completed a postgraduate course on Industrial Organization at the London School of Economics. He has taught as a non-tenured professor at the Faculty of Economics of 'Sapienza' University of Rome and at 'Alma Mater Studiorum' University in Bologna.
He joined the Bank of Italy in 1986 and was assigned to the Banking and Financial Supervision Area, where he worked on the reorganization of Italy's state-owned banks, bank crisis management, and the drafting of the Consolidated Law on Banking and its implementing regulations. From 1999 to 2006, he was the Deputy Head of the Competition Division, with duties connected to its role of antitrust authority in the banking sector. In 2006, he moved to the Organization Directorate, where he was put in charge of the Planning and Organizational Development Division and managed the reorganization of the Bank's branch network. From 2013 to 30 June 2020, he was Head of the Secretariat to the Governing Board and Communications Directorate. In this capacity, he served as secretary for the meetings of the Governing Board deciding on issues with an impact outside the Bank and also as secretary to the Joint Directorate of IVASS. He dealt with the reform of the Bank's capital and the related governance issues. He was appointed Managing Director on 1 July 2020, taking on the roles of Ethics and Anti-Corruption Officer, Transparency Officer, Managing Director for Internal Audit (up to 4 February 2024) and Data Protection Officer (up to 26 August 2024). As Managing Director, he served as Secretary to the Governing Board between 5 February 2024 and 31 March 2026.
He has authored books and studies on banking supervision, antitrust matters, internal auditing, the fight against corruption, and the history of Banca d’Italia.
